What is a grinder?
Grinders, also known as crushers, are herb mills used to grind down plant material.
A grinder is part of a stoner’s basic gear. Grinders come in all sizes, made from all kinds of materials, with or without pollen filters, with or without storage compartments, and can be electric or mechanical.
What material should a grinder be made of?
Grinders are made of wood, stone or soapstone, acrylic, and various metals such as aluminum, stainless steel, or titanium.
Wooden and stone grinders are equipped with pins to grind the plant material. They are not suitable for very moist plant material or resins.
Acrylic grinders have conical teeth that can also be used to grind resins or moist material.
Stainless steel grinders not only look elegant but are also virtually indestructible. Since these grinders are designed to work with great precision, the grinding mechanism is extremely sharp and does not dull even after frequent use. Stainless steel grinders are suitable for any material of any consistency.
If you want to grind resins and plant material of any consistency, a metal grinder is a must-have.
How big should my grinder be? Two-piece or multi-piece?
The basic design of a grinder consists of two parts with staggered teeth, between which the material is ground. Two-piece grinders are perfectly adequate when small amounts are to be processed directly for use. Plus, they make for a space-saving grinder that’s perfect for on the go.
If you plan to use the grinder frequently while traveling, a crusher with an additional storage compartment (stash) is a good idea.
If you want to process larger quantities, we recommend not only a larger device but also one with a pollen screen and a pollen chamber. That’s where you can collect the valuable kief.
Keeping Your Grinder Clean - But How?
To clean your grinder, all you need is a brush or paintbrush with stiff bristles. You can also use warm water to help remove resin and moist plant matter.
Grinders made of acrylic, aluminum, titanium, or stainless steel can be placed in the dishwasher.
Wooden and stone grinders should only be cleaned by hand.
Rinse wooden grinders with lukewarm water, not hot water, and brush them clean. If the wood warps, the grinder will become unusable. Wooden and stone grinders should always be dried thoroughly, as the pins on very inexpensive models are not always made of stainless steel.
